Mingas: what it means to be built by neighbors

Every window and door was built in town by a local carpenter. Every stone wall has a name attached to it.

A minga is a workday shared. Neighbors show up, the work gets done, and everyone eats together afterwards. It is how roads get repaired here, how walls go up, and how the farm was built.

The stonemasons who laid the river-stone corners are the same neighbors who invited me in for a meal in 2006. The carpenter is my neighbor and friend Marcelo who built every window and door from his shop nearby.

When guests ask who designed the cabins, the honest answer is: Marcelo, over twenty years of afternoons.
